Fort Sauerkraut-Hebron ND.

A few weeks ago Barry and I visited Ft. Sauerkraut about 30 minutes from us...we were amazed at the story behind it...here is is as follows... Barry reading every detail of the hisstory of the Fort...great display!

Ft. Sauerkdraut was build in Hebron, ND in November 1892. Hebron was founded in 1885 by two German men who repreented Germans from Russia...Charles Krautz and Fernandine Leutz. The city grew slowly over the next few years bringing in many immigrnats from Russia...the Germans from Russia that wer along the Volga river...these immigrants homesteaded the pririe around Hebron, ND...the growth was also made possible by the end of the Dakotah Sioux's rebellion end due to being forced to reservations...the Sioux wanted no part of the reservations...Custer had died about 20 years previous and very few uprisings happened...in Novemeber 1892 rumor spread that a large number of Dakotah Sioux had broken out of the reservation and was heading their way up to mischief...this sent immigrants inot a panic and decided to quickly build a fort to protect themselves and their community...due to the lack of trees and the inabilty to order lumber ahead of time the immigrants built from the only thing they had SOD...the Fort was christened Fort Sauerkraut due to the immigrants German heritage it was only occupied about two to three weeks...the rumor that had started the uproar was proved to be false and people returned to their normal lives...the fort stood for a time and then either fell down or was destroyed a relica is now standing where the original stood many years before...donations are being accepted to make a better fort for the future.

  1. above is only small part of history displayed at sight.. The way I read
it the name was from Charles Krautz being an unhappy person and those around him came up with the name Sauerkrautz Fort.
